NCJW Welcomes Marriage Equality in the Nation’s Capital
March 4, 2010, Washington, DC -- The National Council of Jewish Women (NCJW) celebrates with residents of the District of Columbia as they seek licenses to marry under the District's same sex marriage law effective today. NCJW President Nancy Ratzan released the following statement:
"The nation’s capital took another step forward in the struggle to achieve marriage equality throughout the United States when it became the sixth jurisdiction in the country to grant the right to marry to same sex couples. We fervently hope this achievement will not only help the many individuals who can now take advantage of their new rights but also stand as a symbol of human rights to all.
"The overwhelming support in the Council of the District of Columbia, which enacted the law, is also an affirmation of the right of the District's citizens to enact legislation without interference by the US Congress, which in this instance did not stand in the way of the new law as it has on other occasions. Unfortunately, the federal government will continue to refuse equal rights and benefits to same sex couples pursuant to the ill-named Defense of Marriage Act. The fight to win marriage equality nationwide must continue, but today is a day of celebration for the District and for supporters of equal rights under law."
The National Council of Jewish Women (NCJW) is a grassroots organization of volunteers and advocates who turn progressive ideals into action. Inspired by Jewish values, NCJW strives for social justice by improving the quality of life for women, children, and families and by safeguarding individual rights and freedoms.
