We're Partnering with the White House for Social Change

Since January 20, practically from the moment the new administration stepped into the White House, NCJW's grassroots power has proven pivotal in the advancement of our vision for America -- a vision that strives for an equitable, just, and progressive policy agenda in the United States. In just a few months of this administration, NCJW has been at the forefront of the successful movements to:

  • Ensure the enactment of the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act
  • Repeal the detrimental global gag rule
  • Expand SCHIP, the children's health insurance program
  • Restore access to affordable contraception, and expand young women's access to emergency contraception
  • Begin the process to overturn the HHS conscience rule
  • Release restrictions on embryonic stem cell research -- thereby returning rationality and science to policy decisions
  • Create the new White House Council on Women and Girls
  • Develop a Presidential Commission of Women through congressional action
  • Advance the cause of achieving marriage equality, with landmark victories in Iowa, Vermont, and DC

Most recently, I was appointed to serve on the President's Advisory Council for Faith-based and Neighborhood Partnerships. This 25-person council will provide recommendations to the President, White House, and other government agencies and leaders -- ensuring that faith-based organizations, community organizations, and the government can be effective partners in advancing social change.

I have the honor of representing NCJW on two specific task forces in the Council: one that is charged with "addressing teen pregnancy and reducing the need for abortion," and one focused on issues related to "fatherhood and healthy families." NCJW is uniquely poised to provide expertise and insight in these two areas, earning a place at these tables through our unwavering commitment to social justice and the well-being of women, children, and families.

This White House appointment is a clear confirmation that NCJW is seen as a vital and valued partner in creating new paths forward. More importantly, this Council position represents an extraordinary opportunity for NCJW to have a voice in this administration and in creating the kind of change we all believe in.

I also recognize the power and potential that you hold as an individual member of the NCJW community. Your role as an NCJW advocate, volunteer, member, or supporter has been instrumental in the victories of our past, as well as the opportunities we have today.

Now we must focus on the role you can play in shaping our tomorrow. Now is the time to stand up, speak out, and then take your own seat at a "table" where you can impart the courage, compassion, and power of NCJW.
