NCJW Applauds Maine’s New Marriage Equality Law

May 6, 2009, Washington, DC -- The National Council of Jewish Women (NCJW) today applauded the actions of Maine's legislature and of Governor John Baldacci in enacting the state's new Marriage Equality Act. The act passed with overwhelming support in the legislature, and with Governor Baldacci's signature, it became the first law legalizing same sex marriage with both gubernatorial and legislative support. It is also the first such law to be enacted without judicial involvement. NCJW President Nancy Ratzan issued the following statement:

"NCJW applauds the Maine legislature and Governor John Baldacci for enacting Maine's new Marriage Equality Act and for doing so without the pressure of judicial action. NCJW firmly supports the extension of this important civil right to gay and lesbian couples and has worked hard to achieve it all over the country.

"The Maine Freedom to Marry Coalition of over 34 organizations and over 150 Maine clergy is to be commended for its diligence in organizing broad support throughout the state -- work that will have to continue if equal marriage opponents succeed in putting the Marriage Equality Act on the November ballot for a referendum.

"But now is the time to congratulate Maine for standing on the side of marriage equality and making its state motto, dirigo ("I lead"), a true expression of its commitment to civil rights for all. NCJW encourages every state to follow Maine and pass similar laws and ensure that the freedom to marry becomes a secure civil right everywhere in the nation."

The National Council of Jewish Women (NCJW) is a grassroots organization of volunteers and advocates who turn progressive ideals into action. Inspired by Jewish values, NCJW strives for social justice by improving the quality of life for women, children, and families and by safeguarding individual rights and freedoms.
