NCJW Applauds Iowa Supreme Court Decision in Favor of Marriage Equality
April 3, 2009, Washington, DC -- National Council of Jewish Women (NCJW) President Nancy Ratzan today issued the following statement applauding the Iowa Supreme Court decision on same-sex marriage:
"The Supreme Court of Iowa's decision in favor of equal rights for all is a tremendous victory for civil rights advocates and supporters everywhere. The court decision made it clear that the 1998 Iowa law that bans same-sex marriage directly violates the state's equal protection clause.
"This decision ensures that all Iowans can enjoy the security, dignity, and protection that civil marriage provides. NCJW believes that through this decision the Iowa Supreme Court has made an important stride in our country's step-by-step process of realizing the constitutional mandate of liberty and justice for all.
"We extend our best wishes to all of the couples in Iowa who now may choose to recognize their commitment to each other through marriage. NCJW has been active in the fight for marriage equality on the state and national level and will continue to pursue full rights and equal treatment for every person regardless of sexual orientation and gender identity."
The National Council of Jewish Women (NCJW) is a grassroots organization of volunteers and advocates who turn progressive ideals into action. Inspired by Jewish values, NCJW strives for social justice by improving the quality of life for women, children, and families and by safeguarding individual rights and freedoms.
