NCJW Applauds Connecticut Supreme Court Decision on Same-Sex Marriage

October 10, 2008, Washington, DC -- National Council of Jewish Women (NCJW) President Nancy Ratzan issued the following statement applauding the Connecticut Supreme Court decision on same-sex marriage:

"The people of Connecticut and civil rights advocates everywhere have a great victory to celebrate. The Connecticut Supreme Court's decision in Kerrigan & Mock, et al v. Department of Public Health affirms equal rights for all and restores essential justice by declaring that state-sanctioned discrimination and separate standards are unacceptable. The Connecticut court's decision declares that civil unions are insufficient for protecting the rights of gay couples.

"NCJW supports the right of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Americans to affirm and protect their relationships through marriage and to seek its legal benefits. We are proud that NCJW was active in the effort to achieve marriage equality in Connecticut. NCJW will continue to pursue full emancipation and equal treatment nationwide for every person regardless of sexual orientation and gender identity."

The National Council of Jewish Women (NCJW) is a grassroots organization of volunteers and advocates who turn progressive ideals into action. Inspired by Jewish values, NCJW strives for social justice by improving the quality of life for women, children, and families and by safeguarding individual rights and freedoms.
