NCJW Applauds California Decision on Same-Sex Marriage

May 16, 2008, Washington, DC -- National Council of Jewish Women (NCJW) President Nancy Ratzan issued the following statement applauding the California Supreme Court decision on same-sex marriage:

"People in California and human rights supporters everywhere have much cause for celebration. The California Supreme Court took action to restore justice by striking down that state's ban on same-sex marriage as unconstitutional -- a ban actively opposed by NCJW.

"We support the right of LGBT Americans to affirm and protect their relationships through marriage and to seek its legal benefits. Buoyed by this legal victory, we pledge to redouble our efforts to provide equal rights for same-sex couples."

The National Council of Jewish Women (NCJW) is a grassroots organization of volunteers and advocates who turn progressive ideals into action. Inspired by Jewish values, NCJW strives for social justice by improving the quality of life for women, children, and families and by safeguarding individual rights and freedoms.
